Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Hey There!, I'm Shawn, I am a 48 and Growing up in the FL Keys, I have been on, in or under the water more often then not. I joined the US Navy at 17, and was stationed in San Diego, where among other things I attended Dive School, and was a rescue diver and Decompression Chamber operator on Dive support boat. I have also been diving recreationally for 30 years, I have no idea how many dives i have done, but it has to be 2000 +. I am certified as a PADI Divemaster, advanced, rescue, etc

A little about myself, my interests and my plans

In the Navy, a Diver is considered a specialized but a secondary qualification. My primary Rating/MOS was an Engineman, which is just as it sounds a guy who works on engines, lol. So i am a pretty good Mechanic, on propulsion as well as ancillary systems. The Unit that I was assigned to while working on the dive boat, was Special Boat Unit 12, ( the guys who transport the SEALS to and from their objectives), where i was formally taught Navigation, Rules of the Road, Radar Operation etc... and qualified as a Boat Captain, for 24ft RHIBS, 42 ft, Fountain, 65 Ft Patrol Boats ( one of which I drove from Norfolk through the Panama Canal to San Diego)

In the intervening years I have worn a lot of hats, but the one I have worn the longest is the one for a Firefighter/EMT, So I am pretty good to have around in case of an emergency or injury. I have been a Brick Mason, an Office Manager, owned a computer repair company, I even went to culinary school for a while to be a chef, so I know my way around a kitchen, and am considered an excellent chef.

Personally, most of the time I am quiet and reserved, I read voraciously , preferring it to TV, on an eclectic selection of books, which also describes my music play list. I am learning to play the Guitar at present..... playing it well is an overstatement. I love the peace, tranquility, smell, sounds, challenge of being on the water.

So a little update …. I bought a bout a couple of years ago.,, and have been slowly refitting her… alone… she is a rare and beautiful lady..

. My boat is the last of only 6 ever designed and built by a guy named Henry

She turned 50 this month.. and cost $185,000 new in 1974… corrected that is around 1.4 million.. but you look at her and you just see a boat, nothing special to look at, but if you peel back he her panties and you will find the most overbuilt boat I have ever seen.. their was no accountant on site.. best of everything.. solid old growth Burmese teak all of it end grains no plywood…even the battens holding up the overhead and furniture.. no rot.. Everything .. and I mean every surface is tabbed to the hull.. she is solid glass no core, the locker doors and drawers open and shut like new... bronze everywhere ( the damn engine exhaust is bronze… When I re did the hatch screen the staples were bronze.. make a widget out of plastic $1 steel $10 stainless $20, bronze $100 because it last forever..

I have found 4 of the other 5 boats since I got mine… all but hull #1. I headlined the New York boat show in 74 but that’s all I can find.. all the rest are still in service.

After Scheel closed up shop
Due to the oil embargo, and the resulting price of resins, he sold the hull mold to Charlie Morgan, who built 12 Morgan 45 ketch and 100 ish of the 461,2,3 line for the moorings charter fleet.. but for $100k .. and less 6 years later.
