Dear Shipmates

Introduction

First, cheers for taking the time to view my profile, I know it can’t have been an easy decision after seeing the display photo! Anyhow I’m Matt, 25, from New Zealand, and I’d love to be your crewman, whatever boat you’ve got, wherever you want to go. A mad keen boatie from a young age, I love getting out on the water whenever possible for a surf or a spot of fishing and diving, or simply for general fun, chat and relaxation!
As a dutiful crewman, any chore you reckon is beneath you, is a bit of me… cleaning, cooking, driving, serving, watching, navigating, filling tanks (any scuba and/or water and/or desalinaters on board)- the works. A minor warning: I have a small amount of proper sailing experience, limited to one incredible three month voyage through Findacrew in the far north and east of Indonesia from December-February 2015/16, where the knowledge needed on board was confined to hoisting the sail, navigation and general boat safety and awareness. Nevertheless I’m real eager to learn every aspect possible about the splendid sport of sailing, and quickly, to make your trip more relaxing and enjoyable.

I completed a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Environmental Science in 2015 and in 2016 pursued postgraduate diploma studies in oenology and viticulture, an industry I’m extremely passionate about as it offers the ability to work in and outdoors, use of head and hands, and, of course, frequent sampling of the Gods’ nectar! Recently I've just completed vintages in NZ, France, England and Australia, producing some awesome wine,
In 2012 I had a blast working and travelling around the world, visiting Europe and South East Asia, learning a lot about personal responsibilities, the value of hard work, and cultural sensitivity. Later trips to Mongolia and Indonesia as mentioned helped develop better people skills, and an outgoingness I attribute as the most tangible benefit of travelling.
A lot of my interests involve the outdoors, including various sports like skiing and tramping, as well as the kiwi summer/winter institutions of cricket and rugby. I’ve tried never to miss an opportunity for a dive since I was 16 and am currently PADI Advanced Open Water certified, with plenty of experience under my belt from throughout NZ and South East Asia. Mental exercise is equally important and I’m a pretty voracious talker or reader of any quality fiction and non-fiction!
Long-term I hope to buy and retire on my own yacht, but the plan is to acquire a far deeper understanding of boats and the ocean by continuing as an apprentice-type crewman before setting sail myself.

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

share experiencevisit remote placesseek adventureface challengesgain experiencelearn to saillive off the gridsustainable traveltravel

I’ve been around boats for a lot of my childhood, but regrettably never learnt to adequately sail, a skill I’m highly motivated to grasp the ins and outs of for the future. I love being on the water and the beauty of sailing is one can simultaneously accommodate many other above and below water passions, in the company of kindred spirits. I believe that crewing on a boat requires a confident, adaptable and patient person to suit changing clients or weather conditions, traits if given the opportunity will be exhibited in abundance on your vessel!
