Everyone aboard are expected to be reasonable and intelligent people, else I wouldn't have them aboard. As such, your thoughts are important and I will listen to them and take them into account, discuss decisions. However, at some point a decision needs to be made. If a consensus can be had, great. If not, I make the decision.
It is more important, to me, that a crew person be someone I can spend large amounts of time in a somewhat cramped environment and who will pitch in and "pull their own weight" than that they have tons of sailing experience. A willingness to dig in, a willingness to get along are more highly prized than 100,000 sea miles.
I am an ASA sailing instructor, with a USCG OUPV and 100-ton master's in process (would already have them, but Damn You Covid!) as well as Yachtmaster Ocean also in process (taking the exam after I take the USCG tests) and over 40 years of experience.
The skipper is happily married and is vehemently NOT looking for romance.
