Dear Shipmates

Introduction

We are a couple that are both USCG 100 ton captains and run vessels in Alaska during the summer. We are looking to escape the Alaskan winters by jumping on some boats elsewhere. Our long term goal is to own a sailboat and travel (slowly) around the world during Alaskan winters. We are currently just looking to work (paid, unpaid, or contribute towards expenses) towards that goal while fine tuning our skills.
Kristen has been a captain for over 15 years with a lot of experience on different types of vessels all over the world from sailing blue water crossings to water taxis and large freighters around Alaska. Ben has been a captain for almost 20 years with most of his experience on fishing vessels.
We are experienced and understand the difficulties (and the joys) of running a yacht. We are more than willing to participate in navigation, chartwork, watchkeeping (even those all nighters), basic engine checks, and whatever needs to be done so everything goes to plan.
We have both worked in the tourism industry and have always gotten along with fellow crew members. We work hard and don't mind challenges. This is just a step towards our ultimate goal - our own sailboat.

I have my Yachtmaster 200 tons with IYT (MCA recognized) and my USCG 100 ton license. STCW and IYT International Crew certified. (Retired) PADI Scuba diving instructor (and emergency first response instructor), Wilderness First Responder (certified to deal with medical emergencies in remote locations), and an ex professional underwater photographer (have had a few pictures published in travel magazines and as postcards). I've done a few boat deliveries acting both as skipper and/or crew. I drove many boats for scuba diving companies. I drove a 186 freighter around Alaska delivering freight. I've driven water taxis around the bays in Alaska. I started my own fishing charter in Homer, Alaska and have since sold it.
I have been a diver for 22 years, a PADI scuba diving instructor (MSDT) for 11 of those years. I can teach a variety of specialtes as well as Emergency First Response. I pretty much grew up on a powerboat, so I'm well familiar and comfortable on powerboats. I have worked on sailboats, so I feel at ease with sailing as well.
Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, graduated from Florida State University with a degree in criminology and criminal justice. I decided I wanted to see the world and started traveling.
I left the states in 2005 and traveled/lived/worked all of the world before coming to Alaska in 2014 and laying down some roots. I have a lot of experience working on a variety of boat and living on primitive islands with not many luxuries.
I am currently residing in Alaska where I am self employed. I run a dog daycare/dog boarding/rescue/and foster farm. I absolutely love animals and being surrounded by them, but don't worry - they won't be coming with me. I have staff that will be running my business while I follow my sea dreams. I still drive boats and have my own boat in Alaska.
Ben owns a fishing charter company in Homer, Alaska that operates May - September. Our Alaskan lifestyle is one where we live off grid on 15 acres on farm with goats, chickens, ducks, cats, and dogs - lots of dogs. We fish and hunt for a lot of our food and we're trying out our green thumb.
