I am a scientist. About 20 years ago I became fascinated with the idea of purchasing a boat and sailing around the world. I’d been on boats before but nothing like that. I took sailing lessons and then somehow convinced someone to let me rent their sailboat. From then on I bare-boat chartered various sailboats for family vacations or with friends. We cruised a variety of places in North America and the Caribbean including the Chesapeake Bay, BVIs, California Channel Islands, San Juan Islands, Sea of Cortez, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, to name a few. I finally found and purchased a boat in 2015. In 2018 I sailed her from the Chesapeake Bay through the Panama Canal to Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, California.

I searched a long time for a boat that was affordable, comfortable for two people, easy to single-hand, and could take me safely anywhere on the earth. I purchased a 1996 Valiant 39 in 2015 and have continually been fitting and refitting her ever since. I am very safety conscious, so much of the work I have done is related to structural and functional integrity. My primary safety strategy is avoidance of danger, but in the event something unavoidable arises, I want to be ready. I try to keep the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) philosophy as much as possible while still enjoying the comforts and conveniences of modern technology. I believe in self-sufficiency, so I do everything I can myself. As a result, I understand the boat's systems and can address most issues that arise myself without drama. Although I have a very laid-back attitude about most things, I have develop three cardinal rules I insist on following: 1) No short-cuts, 2) No rushing, and 3) Always have a back up. Those three rules provide the foundation for my relationship I have developed with my boat: "I take care of her and she takes care of me." Isn't that the way it should be in any relationship?

A few years ago I ended a marriage of 28 years to a woman with a serious mental illness. When I initially got married my intention was to spend the rest of my life with someone who shares my hopes and dreams. I have to admit I still yearn for that kind of connection, which is why I specified “May consider romance” on my profile. But I realize now that kind of thing can be mysterious and evasive (at least for me). People who enjoy sailing on small boats are extraordinary and uncommon. So, I’ve lowered my expectations and now hope to simply find a compatible sailing partner who is interested in going on some adventures with me. I’m looking for someone female because I have a sensitive soul and generally get along better with women. I plan to stop working July of 2024, sail to Hawaii, and cruise around there until I decide what to do next. Until then I plan to coastal cruise around Southern California and prepare the boat for the passage to Hawaii. Maybe I’ll stay in Hawaii, maybe I’ll head back to the mainland, or maybe I’ll continue westward. I don’t know. But not knowing how a voyage will end is part of the adventure.
