Dear Shipmates

Introduction

I’m originally from Germany, grew up in Canada, and then moved to the US. I also lived in China for a year back before it was 'open', and the Middle East for 8 years. I windsurfed for decades, then switched to kiting (twin tip and then foil), love anything in, on, under the water (especially warm water, but wetsuits are great). Am a decent kayaker, prefer SUP. Haven’t traveled much since COVID, and I miss it. I would especially love to sail around Europe or Polynesia, but I’m open to the world. I’ve been on a number of sailing charter vacations and loved them, but didn’t really get a chance to learn how to sail. I took some lessons on monohulls last year, have been sailing about once a week this summer, and am eager to have more hands-on learning. I love learning, reading, having intelligent discussions. Away from the water, I enjoy hikes, exploring, yoga, snowboarding and skiing in the winter, and trying (almost) anything new. I love animals. So, if you have a critter on board, that might be a bonus. Oh, and I love scuba and snorkeling. Being able to breathe underwater and hang out with the sea creatures is amazing.

A little about myself, my interests and my plans

I'm very organized, and like a clean, tidy, organized space - especially in a small place like a boat. As I’m a novice sailor, I’ll always happily follow all of the orders of an experienced (and safety conscious) Captain! Other than that, I would prefer if other decisions might be more of a team effort (maybe have some input on minor itinerary choices, such as where to stop, swim, what to eat and cook, etc.). I love trying new food, and I can usually make something yummy out of available bits and pieces. I like the occasional glass of wine or a drink but am totally fine without any on board.

I enjoy diverse music, especially the upbeat, happy and danceable kind, so if there is music on board, that’s great, but just the sound of the ocean is wonderful too. I used to speak conversational Italian and Spanish quite fluently, but they’ve gotten rusty. With some practice, I could improve quickly. Socially, I prefer one on one and small groups to large, noisy and/or drunken crowds.

I am open to short and longer trips and would prefer starting my sailing adventure in an area of relatively calm and warm waters, with shorter daily distances between land and anchorage. I see most people seem a bit younger here or prefer younger people. Understandably. I’m no spring chicken, but not ready for the soup pot either. And I really want to get out there before this becomes the case! ;-)

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

have a holidayshare experiencevisit remote placesseek adventurefulfill a dreamgain experiencelearn to saillive off the gridtravel

Aside from becoming a competent sailor, being on a boat away from crowds, people, traffic, mass media and the Internet …. Being surrounded by water, nature, animals, sun, sky, and a few interesting, and hopefully fun and kind fellow humans with whom to share experiences and connect is so appealing. If the captain and/or crew are from different countries and cultures, even better - I love the opportunity to practice my languages or learn new ones, and I usually feel most at home when I'm not at home. A heavenly sailing adventure would entail sailing, heeling, warm waters, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, beach combing, paddling, learning, reading, philosophical discussions (where we solve all of life's problems over a glass of wine...), and hanging up a hammock somewhere along the way. :-) I know there are always unexpected storms along the way (literal and figurative), but one can always dream (and plan) for the best results.
