I’m a retired engineer and went on a sailing holiday last year with a friend who has a part share in a boat. I loved it, it was just me and him, so I had to muck in. I learned a lot, but probably a drop in the proverbial ocean in terms of needed experience. I used to do a lot of scuba diving and have boat handling experience from handling RHIB’s, dropping and picking up divers etc. I want to gain more experience in a cost effective manner and make sure sailing is definitely for me before embarking on the training courses.
I’ve since had a fantastic trip sailing in the USA in and around New York, Long Island Sound and Rhode Island. I learned a lot, but still have a lot more to learn. We did some night sailing taking 3 hour watches, had some very good weather and some lumpy seas. So overall a very good experience!
