POWER Ocean Yachts, Caver Motor Yachts, Richardson, Bertram, Trumphy, Century, Hallberg Rassy, Oyster 56 and 66, Egg Harbor, Back Cove, Sunreef 62, Nordlund 78, Trojan, Boston Whaler, MV Holiday (49 passenger- Lake Erie), Victoria Clipper (300+ passenger Seattle –Victoria B.C. Ferry). Have served as “from the factory “delivery skipper for Ocean and Carver Yachts.
Non-sailing Education BS- Case Institute Technology (cum laude); JD -Cleveland Marshall School of Law (magna cum laude). Mediator training at Northwestern University.
Vessel Repair/Maintenance Above average repair skills for most shipboard systems based on a lifetime of owning and operating boats and 8 years as a live aboard in the West Indies . Experience includes complete rebuild of three salvaged vessels. Upon boarding for the first time, expect a mini survey of the vessel, its systems, equipment, rigging, spares, tools, and safety gear. Completed Yanmar diesel course.
Personal No smoke, alcohol, drugs, allergies, seasickness.. I will not sail on a boat, which allows smoking; Alcohol by others is no concern –but not to excess underway. No dietary restrictions but require healthy food and good coffee. No meds, health problems or limitations; Reasonable cooking skills. No “hot bunking”. Advanced Open Water PADI diver ( 300 dives) . Red Cross First Aid and CPR Card. Hiker; Snow Skier, Mountain Biker; USA passport. Covid 19 Vaccine completed March,2021.
Passage Making Goals 1) return safely with a happy, healthy, more cohesive and better-trained crew; 2) Do not break the boat; 3) No drama and no yelling.
Depending on the trip, I usually come aboard with a Fluke meter ; a few tools; a Garmin In Reach locator/transmitter; 406 PLB EPIRB; standalone GPS/computer with TimeZero Nav system. I can also provide an Iridium Phone on request.
Offshore sailing with people who do not know each other can be great or a disaster. Everyone must be completely candid about abilities, expectations and the condition of the vessel. This resume is accurate and I expect equal candor and accuracy regarding you, your vessel and your expectations. I enjoy working with folks who want to learn and equally open to learning from the experiences of others.
Additional crew Depending on the voyage additional experienced offshore crew may be available.
Position Depending on owner needs, the vessel, and the voyage I can come on board as Captain or as Crew.
Costs and Fees Negotiable depending on vessel and voyage.
References and Information Exchange References from crew who have sailed for me; owners for whom I have delivered yachts, marine professionals, and fellow cruisers can willingly be provided. Similarly I may request references from you; the most recent ship survey; rigging inspection report if available ; and your basic route/cruise plan including anticipated total number of persons on board

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

After living aboard in Caribbean we have sold our boat so my wife can spend more time at our ski house and with grand children. I want to go to sea. Wiling to come aboard as Captain, watch stander , trainer/teacher. Regardless of position always expect to do my share of cooking and cleaning. Please note that I am a reasonably good surveyor and will inspect the vessel before departure - if not in acceptable condition for planned voyage - i will not sail.
