Dear Shipmates

Introduction

I'm interested in coastal and offshore passages. I've logged over 700 days, which includes 16000 nm offshore. I've made a couple of 40 day passages, and several of about 2 weeks. I've also put in a lot of sea time inland--on sailboats, tugboats, and an 88 ft. passenger motor boat. My positions onboard have ranged from crew, watch keeping, cook, navigator, 1st mate, skipper, and deck/engineer (on the tugboats) . At this time I think I prefer to ease back onto the water with a positions of crew/watch keeper/cook, but I can fill in wherever is necessary. I am keen to make an atlantic crossing. Not a must, but a preference. I prefer long passages. There's no better place for me in the world than being out of sight of land.

I started sailing as a kid, and started cruising (from Hawaii to New Zealand and back up to Florida) in my early 20s. I got land locked for a while and then started making passages again (between Hawaii and San Francisco, and the coast of Mexico) in my 40s. Well, I'm getting that 20 year itch again at 60 years old. I'm between jobs right now, and would love to get some sea time in before getting land locked again. Aside from sailing, I love traveling, cooking, and spending time with friends. I've also helped a friend deliver his Hallberg Rossy 40 from Manhattan to Miami, and then Newport, RI, to Portland, ME. Most recently I've been sailing the IYC Flying Scots on Tomales Bay (19 foot daysailer). It's great to get back to the basics with no engine and no gauges (no cheating!) to distract me from what's really going on out there--sheer sailing delight. It feels so good to be back on the water again! A few years ago, I walked the Camino de Santiago (over 1000 km in 2 months), and in a lot of ways it feels like I'm still on a pilgrimage. I'm not particularly religious, but my spiritual path is getting deeper by the day. I'm learning to live my life in the present moment. But, you know, I think I learned that decades ago while making pacific passages. I'm good at dealing with whatever mother nature cares to throw at me, and find the joy in life in whatever happens.

In addition to simply following the call of the sea, I'm interested in getting some more sea time in so I can sit for my Captains license. I have a lot of experience at sea, but not very much in the last 5 years. At this point, I simply want to get some deep blue water beneath me. Sometimes my favorite place to be in the world is out of sight of land. It's been too long since I've been there.
