I am an Australian (born in Sydney), who has now lived for 35 years in Finland. I also have Finnish citizenship. I have my own 30 ft sloop, in which I have circumnavigated the Baltic Sea. In addition, I have spent 3 seasons as a paid deckhand sailing the 40 metre Schooner S/Y Helena, which is the Finnish flagship for the Sail Training Association of Finland. I am formally qualified as a registered International Deckhand. This includes fire safety training, first-aid, and navigational courses. I am equally comfortable on board a sailing or powered vessel.

I am a typical Australian, I am easy-going and have a a good sense of humour. I have travelled the world many times and am totally comfortable in the presence of all cultural groups. I am fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. I am a non-smoker and only drink socially, preferring not to drink on board but rather in port. But I am not a prude, and others may do as they wish.
I am an internationally qualified Deckhand (issued in Finland), Industrial Electrician (Australia) and I am a retired academic (Professor of English Linguistics). So, I can mix with all people at all levels. I like to play golf, go sailing, and snorkelling, I'm pretty much interested in anything, including all forms of sport.

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

I simply love sailing, and the ocean. So, the more pertinent question here is why would I not want to crew on a boat. I have sailed northern European waters, the Caribbean, and raced on Sydney Harbour. I have a hankering to cross the Pacific and spend time in Asian waters, and participate in the Sydney to Hobart race.
However, there is probably nowhere where I would not be willing to sail. I am very flexible.
