Itineraries (New)

An itinerary is a route divided into legs showing the planned locations and dates of the main stopovers from the start (initial departure) to the very end (final arrival), which is the destination of the vessel's journey (also called voyage, trip, torn, or expedition).

Each leg has a departure and an arrival date and location. It may also have additional waypoints in between, which might be stopping points or course change points.

Itineraries for vessels at sea are never precise! We use three accuracy levels for the planning status to avoid confusion about what is likely to happen or not:

  • Pending (not accurate) – initial idea, possibilities
  • Preliminary (kinda accurate) – changes may still apply
  • Planned (fairly accurate) – this is what's meant to happen

The duration of an itinerary is counted in days (start to end date) and the leg in nights (departure to arrival date). That is because you may arrive on a Monday and leave on a Tuesday. Therefore, there can be confusion if you were there for one or two days, but it would strictly count as one night without any confusion.

Therefore, you would say you went on a 14-day holiday or trip (the itinerary) and spent 13 nights on all your legs combined, for example.

There is also an important distinction between planning (what's the intention) and estimating (what's calculated). A time of arrival is always an estimate as a calculation is required; that's why it is called ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).

You can't plan to leave San Francisco and arrive in Hawaii 10 minutes later, regardless of how desperate your intention is. If you intend to arrive in Hawaii by a certain date and estimate 10 days for the journey, then you can plan to leave San Francisco 12 to 15 days before. Therefore, your departure date is planned (what's the intention), and the arrival is still an estimate (what's calculated based on season, winds, currents, and many other factors). Plans can change due to weather, government requirements, breakdowns, delays, etc.

The following tips are worth noting to manage your itinerary and maintain an excellent overview:

  • 1) Name your itinerary with a short and clear title, such as 2024 Antarctic Expedition or 2024 Italy Family Torn, that is descriptive, easy to remember, and simple to refer to in conversations.
  • 2) You can set your itinerary's visibility to private while planning it, share it with only those you contact, or share it with anyone who views your profile.
  • 3) Next, add each leg of the significant stopovers by date and location.
  • 4) Then, keep updating each leg as required.

Be realistic and mindful when planning an itinerary. People will arrange their timing and life around it, taking time off work, booking flights, arranging accommodation, etc. It's crucial to let the crew know how accurate they can expect the itinerary to be.

Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Profile last updated: 02/07/2024.

My current location - Sweden East Coast. Heading south towards Stockholm.

My situation. Currently singlehanded 🙂⛵️⛵️⛵️

What I am seeking?

Any EU, British or British Commonwealth or American nationals.

Seeking one crewmember. Preferably female crew for friendship and companionship. I am not seeking romance, just crew and a good shipmate.

About me?

I am single, British and I live in Portsmouth, UK. Had a career in the Aerospace and Space Industry. I have two adult daughters 32 & 30 and both have left home.

Been sailing since I was young and have sailed yachts for more than 30 years. I am a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and probably have at least 45,000+ nm sailed.

I own a 10m / 33ft lift keel monohull yacht. She was purchased in 2004, she is well maintained and up to date. I have sailed her at least 27,000 nm since i purchased her.

I am an open person, kind, considerate and easy going. I have a good sense of humour and really enjoy the company of others.

About the boat, the plans, and current crew

fairly crampedusually cleancomfortablevery safeusually single handedlive on little moneyhave a holidayshare experiencevisit remote placesseek adventurefulfill a dreamface challengeslive off the grid

After 30 years of sailing, including racing, on the Solent and both sides of the English Channel. I have also cruised / raced in the Caribbean (not on my boat though).

But my dream has always been to do some duration sailing further afield. Done the Mediterranean and now it is the Baltic Sea!

Between 2017 and 2021, I sailed mostly singlehanded into the Mediterranean Sea (roughly 13,000nm there and back) and reaching as far east as Turkey. I am now sailing in the Baltic Sea another dream.

Last year, 2023, I sailed singlehanded from Portsmouth into the Baltic via Netherlands, Germany and Denmark to Sweden. Reached as far north as Stockholm and the Aland Islands, including Gotland before returning to Kalmar, Sweden to winter the boat. Very worthwhile as the Swedish coast is very beautiful. Despite inclement weather in 2023, i achieved all my objectives. A distance of approximately 1900nm.

This year, 2024, I have continued my Baltic journey. Kalmar, Oland Island, Gotland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and now north into the Gulf of Bothnia to Vassa, Finland and on to Umea, Sweden to experience high coast midsummer's day. Now heading south down Sweden's east to the south and then round and up to West Sweden.

Travel inside Sweden is relitively easy and trains are good.

I have decided (with some sadness) not to pass through the Gota Canal as I originally planned - it's very expensive high season (circa €800 !!!😔) to pass through and also damage risky to the boat if attempted singlehanded.

Swedish west coast once visited, i will then sail homeward bound through the Kiel Canal and on to Portsmouth, England. A total 2024 season mileage distance of approximately 3000nm.

This is my outline passage plan, finer details of where we visit and for how long for will be jointly decided, as with all our sailing plans and what we would like to see along the way.

I am looking for one crewmember.

Preferably a female person, who's in good health, and crewing for a longer duration, ideally for the whole journey.

If you say 'any duration' in your profile, please clarify? However, I will assume you are availible for at least 6 weeks. 🙂

If you are less experienced or a novice, please don't be put off! I am an experienced sailor and can sail singlehanded, so you will be able to learn at your own pace and I am very happy to assist with this!

Budget? Figures in my profile are an estimate. I'm on a budget also and I will be seeking to keep shared costs down. I can explain more when we chat.

I re-itterate, I am not seeking romance and this is genuinely a shared journey. Nothing more. If female, you will have your own cabin and privacy.
I do have past experence with FindaCrew and generally crews (male & female) it has been a very positive and happy experience. At least two have offered to write me a reference.

If you are interested I will be delighted to chat with you and very pleased to hear from you. Get in touch!!!

Best Regards and thanks for reading this, Stuart
