Dear Shipmates

Introduction

I am retired. I have worked at a number of very significant mechanical/electrical jobs including as a marine mechanic, a Steam Engineer, a Mechanical Engineer, and Prototype builder, I bought a mechanically deficient and generally neglected but very good sailboat. A sister-ship won Vic - Maui 1988 9 days, 17 hours, 31 minuites . This boat has been to Mexico and Hawaii. The boat and I are ready to go!

On my bucket list is to prepare a sailboat for some serious sailing and learn to sail better. I have done a fair bit of power boating and living aboard in the past. When I prove the boat and myself capable of serious sailing I will decide if I want to travel long distances with her. A willing partner would make my decision much easier!

I have sorted out the important mechanical and electrical systems. Now I will start evaluating the rest of the boat. Haul out completed. Some additional issues dealt with.

My intent is to sail inside Vancouver Island until I feel ready for more. Around Vancouver Island will come later. Then we will see. Mexico and beyond is under consideration! This could end up open ended cruising! A modest start but a potentially open ended sailing endeavour.

In terms of a crew, 1 or more women would be of interest. I am fine with 2 or more women as crew - this may be the only way it will happen due to perceived potential risk to the crew otherwise. There are other possibilities provided a gender balance is maintained. I am 71 and while romance could be possible only if there was clearly mutual interest - it would not happen quickly (I am not unlike a demisexual) and may never happen, it is certainly not a requirement. Respect certainly is! And any nudity will be to your preference.

This is not likely to be an expensive endeavour. I may have some boat expenses. Ideally you could cover your expenses. If we start crossing oceans I may discuss, not necessarily require, additional contributions.

My boat and I are ready to go. I now have sailing experience - it is not extensive.

I have a fair bit of boating experience with power boats in protected waters. I have lived many years on boats (about 20) including 4 years at anchor. I was a self taught mobile marine mechanic for more than a decade. I have the desire to prepare for world cruising - if and when I am prepared I will decide if I am going to continue.

The boat is ready. I would welcome any interest and I may contribute to your travel expenses. I can not guarantee any particular duration of sailing but am open to discussions. I do not expect any serious problems from here on in.

The shakedown has been done, the haul out has been done, heating and autopilot installed.

In terms of sailing around here:

I have spent a lot of time in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, I have friends there and many are on the water with private docks, other acquaintances on boats, and others that are pure land lubbers. I will visit them.

The Gulf Islands are a popular pleasure boating destination for canadians and americans, it gets crowded in boating season.

Desolation Sound sounds like an interesting pleasure boating destination! But it is crowded and sometimes noisy. Someone posted on facebook there was going to be a band on the swimgrid of a yacht on the long weekend. I posted thanks for the warning!

Georgia Straight/ now known as the Salish Sea is more than 10 hours long and about 5 hours wide will be appropriate to practice sailing. There's a torpedo test range just out of Nanoose Bay that is not always active.

There are a few waterfront pubs I intend to visit over the length of Georgia straight.

Some of the Northern Gulf Islands are worth a visit. Specifically Tribune Bay on Hornby Island, Cortes Island various places, Quadra Island for the Pub if nothing else, There are others.

If the idea of heading north has merit it likely involves motoring about 250 Km to Queen Charlotte Straight and possibly further if the wind is inappropriate or the inside passage is taken.

At the north end of the island open ocean sailing becomes possible - north, south or I suppose westerly!

What is expected of the crew

diligenteasy-goingfriendlyrespectfultrustworthygood listenertravel light (little luggage)positive outlookcan pay own expenseswill not bring a bicycleharmony

Retired, nomadic or extended vacationer preferred.

A substantial amount of correspondence and phone conversation is expected before we meet in a public place! If you travel to get here and decide to decline I can provide private accommodation for a week or so until a return can be arranged.

All boating plans are written in the sand at low tide!

The boat and I are ready to go and most of the provisioning has been done.

I offer you the vberth to yourself. There are 2 couches and a rear double berth under the cockpit, curtains on the vberth and the rear berth.

You cover your other costs.

I don't smoke anything.

I do go to pubs given an opportunity.

Yes I would go North and/or around Vancouver Island if I was satisfied with me, my boat, and the crew.

I am hoping to improve everything , including me, enough to make a choice about international sailing.

South East and North West winds most common inside Vancouver Island.

Input from crew for destinations will be listened to and seriously considered.

I have had 2 short term female crew on board! The first, fairly experienced, turned 90 degrees when I gave her the helm so I could do something and when I asked why got very upset related to a different boat she was on that sank. She said she did not know where we were - these waters were very familiar to me and we were at no risk with good visibility, no wind, other boats nearby but not close. She declared I had hit her expiry date and went below - I checked the navigation info and headed back home and got there before dark. It was over!

The second, very experienced including as a captain, chose to end discussions by stating she was unwilling to debate and the discussion is over, even in areas well within my expertise and well beyond hers - that was not the worst! At one point, while at the dock, she suggested I was a narcissist and left me in the cockpit - that was the straw - I left and said I would be back tomorrow. She had an opportunity to explain the next day and didn't so I declared the end.

If you are seriously interested in sailing with me I will ask them to contact you. I have never made an improper advance on either of them.

At this point, I am going to declare it is not worth my time to seriously correspond with anyone who is not verified on this site (PIV - Personal Identity Verification). I have tried, and it has never worked out. I suspect the likelihood of a scam is at least an order of magnitude (if not 2) if the personal identity verification (PIV) does not happen first! Rather than verify, they back out—I don't have to wonder why now! I need to be sure who I am talking too and for the safety of both of us a record of that correspondence will be recorded here.
