Itineraries

An itinerary is a route divided into legs showing the planned locations and dates of the main stopovers from the start (initial departure) to the end (final arrival), which is the destination of the vessel's journey (also called voyage, trip, torn, or expedition).

Each leg has a departure and an arrival date and location. It may also have additional waypoints in between, which might be stopping points or course change points.

Accuracy of itineraries

Itineraries for vessels at sea are never precise! We use three accuracy levels for the planning status to avoid confusion about what is likely to happen or not:

  • Pending (not accurate) – initial idea, possibilities
  • Preliminary (kinda accurate) – changes may still apply
  • Planned (fairly accurate) – this is what's meant to happen
Days vs Nights

The duration of an itinerary is counted in days (start to end date) and the leg in nights (departure to arrival date). That is because you may arrive on a Monday and leave on a Tuesday. Therefore, there can be confusion if you were there for one or two days, but it would strictly count as one night without any confusion.

Therefore, you would say you went on a 14-day holiday or trip (the itinerary) and spent 13 nights on all your legs combined, for example.

Planning vs Estimates

There is also an important distinction between planning (what's the intention) and estimating (what's calculated). A time of arrival is always an estimate as a calculation is required; that's why it is called ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).

You can't plan to leave San Francisco and arrive in Hawaii 10 minutes later, regardless of how desperate your intention is. If you intend to arrive in Hawaii by a certain date and estimate 10 days for the journey, then you can plan to leave San Francisco 12 to 15 days before. Therefore, your departure date is planned (what's the intention), and the arrival is still an estimate (what's calculated based on season, winds, currents, and many other factors). Plans can change due to weather, government requirements, breakdowns, delays, etc.

Tips for planning an itinerary

The following tips are worth noting to manage your itinerary and maintain an excellent overview:

  • 1) Name your itinerary with a short and clear title, such as 2024 Antarctic Expedition or 2024 Italy Family Torn, that is descriptive, easy to remember, and simple to refer to in conversations.
  • 2) You can set your itinerary's visibility to private while planning it, share it with only those you contact, or share it with anyone who views your profile.
  • 3) Next, add each leg of the significant stopovers by date and location.
  • 4) Then, keep updating each leg as required.

Be realistic and mindful when planning an itinerary. People will arrange their timing and life around it, taking time off work, booking flights, arranging accommodation, etc. It's crucial to let the crew know how accurate they can expect the itinerary to be.

Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Hi, I’m Dennis. Thanks for taking the time to check me out.
I've just arrived in Zihuatenejo where I'm going to hangout until May 2025. I'll return to Mazatlán mid May.
If your interested in this or coming to Zihuatenejo give me a wave. I'm on the free plan so can't message but if I'm interested I can upgrade.

To save you time:
I will only be considering liberal minded (left of centre), socially responsible, physically & mentally fit crew. I DO NOT believe in creation, I believe in evidence based science. I also strongly believe in ending the Zionist genocide and pursuing all perpetrators of war crimes.

So, if you're still with me........ read on.

I wish there was an opportunity to view my profile before you saw that “number”. Unfortunately we only have one opportunity to make a first impression and I appreciate that number may be a disincentive to look further. But please don’t discount this opportunity because of that.

This is NOT about finding romance, it’s about fun and adventure. It’s about expanding friendships, some great sailing, hiking, snorkeling, beautiful landscapes, different cultures with amazing food and an opportunity to learn and expand on your sailing skills. I am a very good teacher with tons of patience and experience. And, who knows what might develop.

I am looking for compatible female crew because I haven’t been able to find a way to do this alone and enjoy it. I’m looking for a minimum of a 3 week commitment to start with. If, if, we were to click and wanted to extend that would be great. Zihuatenejo offers SailFest in February and International Guitar Fest in March. The sailing is all day sailing with two nice places to go andha g out.

Most of my friends are like me. Well educated, professionals and athletes.

I came south in 2015 and have been cruising the west coast of Mexico and Central America ever since. I am Canadian. I grew up in Vancouver but México is now my permanent place of residence.

About the boat, the plans, and current crew

The boat has been my home for 27 years. It’s my pride and joy and is kept in “Bristol” condition. Almost everything is in good working order. If everything worked it wouldn’t be a working sailboat.
Fortunately, I have the skills, spare parts and knowledge to fix almost anything that goes wrong.
She is a former very competitive race boat that has been rebuilt and converted into a very comfortable live aboard cruiser with all the essentials and some luxuries. We have refrigeration with freezer. We make our own water so always have enough for showers with hot water. There is an inverter to make 120 volt power but not enough for a hair dryer. We do NOT have a microwave oven. The propane stove has 2 burners and a great oven. I have a pretty nice sound system with Spotify downloaded music. There is a 36” TV to watch movies if that's your thing and we have Starlink for wifi.

There are 2 cabins, 1 head and a walk in closet. My quarters are in the forward cabin. The aft cabin is the guest/crew quarters. There is plenty of hanging and storage available. All bedding and towels are supplied. We normally shower in the cockpit with me providing privacy as necessary.

She was built like a tank and designed for ocean foul weather racing. I have never once felt it couldn’t handle the worst of the ocean conditions we have been in.

My former crew both advised me to emphasize the boat is immaculately clean and kept that way. Everything has it’s home and must be put back in it’s home when done. Apparently, not common.

When cruising we will be anchoring and we will be remote much of the time. We will only go into a marina if absolutely necessary. Therefore, you need to be able to climb on and off the boat into and out of the dinghy unassisted. There are few dinghy docks out here. Therefore it's beach landing and launching. That takes a little speed, co-ordination and, most importantly agility. It's tricky getting away from the beach in any kind of surf but, touch wood, I've never dumped the dinghy. Yet. And I don't plan on it.

We will have the opportunity to do lots of hiking, walking, snorkeling and fishing.

More on me:
I have a chronological age of 78 but age is a state of mind and I refuse to get old. I spent many years as an extreme athlete which provided benefits when combined with some good genetics has helped keep me fit and young at heart and appearance. (All my posted images are dated for honesty) I have no health issues of concern and take no prescription medications.

I am well educated, was a professional pilot for most of my adult life flying all over the world. This provided me the time and money to be able to pursue several other entrepreneurial activities.

I take pride in my appearance. I am clean neat and tidy. I shave every day, wear my hair short and dress well (off the boat).

I am liberal and socially minded, always considerate of others, respectful, responsible, kind, generous and exceptionally honest. I am extremely wealthy in that I am content with what I have. Financially I’m sufficiently secure so am in no need of a purse or a nurse. I have a pretty good sense of humour albeit somewhat twisted and am very even tempered. I detest violence.

I’ve had 4 crew from this site so far and I’m sure they will provide good references. Two have returned. We've become good friends and stay in touch regularly. I just returned from a month visiting and sailing Lake Ontario with one of them.

About you:

You too are socially and liberal minded and come with a good sense of humour and tolerance. You are fit and currently active. You have no physical impairments or chronic health issues. You are mentally healthy and smart. No depression requiring medication. You have a happy and fun disposition, enjoy good two way conversation. You are curious about life, the world and nature around you
You have an open and inquisitive mind and are reasonably well informed on the ways of the world. Your posted images include “current” (within 6 months) images.

If we find ourselves interested in what we read, we will do a video meetup in the very early stages. That will give both of us a very good opportunity to see if we are a match and willing to proceed further.

What’s Expected of crew:
To come and have fun, have an adventure. If you have experience we can learn off each other. If not but want to learn and make the effort, you could leave here confident you could single hand this boat.

You will be expected to do your share of the grunt work which we share. We keep the boat clean, neat and tidy. I can cook but don’t have much of a repertoire. I can and prefer to do the clean up so if you like to cook it’s a great mix however there are a few things I like to cook. If I cook, I still clean up. The diet is basic and healthy.

You will be expected to pay for your transportation to and from, your food and alcohol, a National Park Pass if required. If we go to a restaurant it’s dutch treat. All of which are very inexpensive. I pay for all the maintenance costs and cover the fuel although won’t turn down contributions to fuel. How much fuel we burn depends on how much wind there is and how much of a hurry we are in.
