Itineraries

An itinerary is a route divided into legs showing the planned locations and dates of the main stopovers from the start (initial departure) to the end (final arrival), which is the destination of the vessel's journey (also called voyage, trip, torn, or expedition).

Each leg has a departure and an arrival date and location. It may also have additional waypoints in between, which might be stopping points or course change points.

Accuracy of itineraries

Itineraries for vessels at sea are never precise! We use three accuracy levels for the planning status to avoid confusion about what is likely to happen or not:

  • Pending (not accurate) – initial idea, possibilities
  • Preliminary (kinda accurate) – changes may still apply
  • Planned (fairly accurate) – this is what's meant to happen
Days vs Nights

The duration of an itinerary is counted in days (start to end date) and the leg in nights (departure to arrival date). That is because you may arrive on a Monday and leave on a Tuesday. Therefore, there can be confusion if you were there for one or two days, but it would strictly count as one night without any confusion.

Therefore, you would say you went on a 14-day holiday or trip (the itinerary) and spent 13 nights on all your legs combined, for example.

Planning vs Estimates

There is also an important distinction between planning (what's the intention) and estimating (what's calculated). A time of arrival is always an estimate as a calculation is required; that's why it is called ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).

You can't plan to leave San Francisco and arrive in Hawaii 10 minutes later, regardless of how desperate your intention is. If you intend to arrive in Hawaii by a certain date and estimate 10 days for the journey, then you can plan to leave San Francisco 12 to 15 days before. Therefore, your departure date is planned (what's the intention), and the arrival is still an estimate (what's calculated based on season, winds, currents, and many other factors). Plans can change due to weather, government requirements, breakdowns, delays, etc.

Tips for planning an itinerary

The following tips are worth noting to manage your itinerary and maintain an excellent overview:

  • 1) Name your itinerary with a short and clear title, such as 2024 Antarctic Expedition or 2024 Italy Family Torn, that is descriptive, easy to remember, and simple to refer to in conversations.
  • 2) You can set your itinerary's visibility to private while planning it, share it with only those you contact, or share it with anyone who views your profile.
  • 3) Next, add each leg of the significant stopovers by date and location.
  • 4) Then, keep updating each leg as required.

Be realistic and mindful when planning an itinerary. People will arrange their timing and life around it, taking time off work, booking flights, arranging accommodation, etc. It's crucial to let the crew know how accurate they can expect the itinerary to be.

Dear Shipmates

Introduction

I am a marine ecologist and have fallen in love with the sea being on a boat just two months after I was born. I have sailed on this boat since I was 8 years old (with my father, just us two). Since 2021 I took command of it and took it from Leros (Greece) back to Italy. The boat feels more like home than home, and I am at my happiest in the middle of the sea, with some nice winds (nothing crazy). I am still not comfortable single handling it (some manoeuvres must be done at the mast) but have taken people with no experience with me, and have sailed it in just two people many times (however I believe in 3 would be the best). I am currently living on board, we just moved (jan 2024) from Monfalcone to Bari where I will stay for a couple of months, still deciding on the next passage but may be towards Trapani, taking it slow with breaks to allow for land exploration and for computer work.

The boat is comfortable and tidy , albeit a bit vintage. Like many boats, it’s work in progress (I have learnt a lot on the DYI side of things but still learning, so if you have any experience on the technical front is very welcome) but the work in progress regards mostly what concerns the ‘comfort’ side of things whereas the operational / sailing equipment is working properly and safe. Some big refits were done this year (rigging/deck) and engine was checked thoroughly. Hull cleaned back to gelcoat before applying new anti fouling and no issues were found.

Currently not available as planning to leave with my partner boat, but looking for people (1-2 max) to join me towards end of August as I will move from Puglia to Naples for a conference mid September. Probably also the return after the conference, but plans to be defined later.

I am looking for one/two people - life on board can mean people are very close all the times so communication and friendliness are a must (and also ability to look after oneself , and be at least moderately tidy. No perfectionism but simple respect and cleaning after oneself). When cruising like to do a relaxing cruise , with sailing but nothing extreme , and also time moored / at anchor. So prefer no adrenaline junkies. Must understand the times of the sea and respect that weather and nature will command the speed of travel and amount of time in harbour. Shared expenses for food, fuel (I prefer sailing anyway and the engine consume little) and eventually harbour costs (I'd prefer to stay anchored anyway). Crew should be willing to share cooking and cleaning responsibilities. No drinking while on passage.
Best if at least one other person is good with harbour manoeuvres , as the boat does not have a bow propeller and it can be hard to moor in the harbour depending on spot and weather . I manage well enough but would appreciate some support in case of need.
