I was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I was in a canoe at two months of age with my folks and have been on and around the water ever since. I went to school in Michigan then joined the Navy in June of 1964. When I joined the Navy I wanted to go to Electricians Mate school and Diving School which I did. . While in the Navy I was on both the east and west coast, Hawaii and the Far East, Hong Kong, Okinawa, Vietnam, Philippines and through the Panama Canal. When I got out of the Navy in 1970 my dream was to sail the coast lines of the world.
After the Navy I worked in Michigan for a few years. I sailed and raced in the Great Lakes for a couple of years and really enjoyed sailing very much. Then the sea started calling me, so I move to Surf Side, Texas just south of Houston on the Gulf coast. There wasn’t enough work, so I move up to Houston, where I worked many jobs from pipe fitter to electrician. Then I was promoted to Superintendent and started building gas purification plants. Life was great till the early ‘80’s when the oil industry died and so did all the work.
I started selling real estate and that too was a slow business at the time. Through the real estate business, I got involved with a transmission shop. I started my own business and for 23 years I was self-employed with All American Transmission in Houston, Texas. I started racing corvettes while I had my business and was involved with NCCC and SCCA for the fun of racing and to promote my business.
While I was racing corvettes I meat a girl named Judy and she had about the same Idea to go sailing. We both talked about sailing and thought it would be a great idea to get a boat and fix it up so that by the time we could retire we would be ready to go cruising.
With that goal in mind, we sold our race car named “First Love” and found a Stamas 44, partly after our fondness for Texas and for our fun race car.
We have reworked or replaced almost every working system on the vessel, which helped to make me very familiar with all the working systems of the boat. After seven years of working and changing we were ready to leave Houston. This was a time in our lives that we had been working toward for ten years.
I sold my business, All American Transmission in June of 2003, and started finalizing all the preparations on the boat.
After sailing for a while we then parted ways and I ended up in Honduras. Met a great family while I was in the La Ceiba shipyard. Made friends with Rita and Tony and their two children Stefi and Florian. On Stefi’s birthday Tony and Rita put a big party for Stefi. I left two day’s later and headed for Panama and said Goodbye. Tony hugged me and said I will get you back Here. I was shocked because Tony never got to emotional. I left for Panama. There is more but you will have to read the book.
