Hi! My name is Wriley. I am a recent graduate from College of the Atlantic in Maine, USA. I studied biology and visual arts, with a focus on seabirds. I love everything associated with islands and the ocean, especially in the high latitudes. I love drawing, printmaking, and painting, especially when working with the natural world. I grew up in New York City, and so I love good music and good food. My experience on boats is mostly from being employed on my colleges research vessel, a 46-foot fiberglass motor vessel. I am very experienced driving zodiacs in rough conditions. I am gaining experience quickly on sailboats as well!

I love the natural world, especially anything seabird or ocean related! I am an artist and a biologist. I have lived and worked on remote offshore islands while conducting research, and so I am used to being in close quarters with other people for prolonged periods in challenging conditions. I love to cook, am happy to clean, and work on overall maintenance of engines and lines. I like to think of myself as pretty outgoing, and I tend to get along with most anyone. I enjoy having a little bit of time to write and draw most days, but understand that sometimes the rigors of being on a boat mean that that’s not possible. I am always open to learning new things, and sharing information about the things I know a lot about!

I am currently traveling on a fellowship about the relationship between seabirds and humans. I am really interested in questions about why people are drawn and islands and seabirds, what the challenges and obstacles are to seabird conservation, and how people’s relationships with birds have changed through history. As part of this, I am following the migratory pathways of seabirds across the Atlantic Ocean. A big reason I am traveling and on FindaCrew is because I am emulating the migration of these birds. What does an Arctic Tern see when it travels the length of the world? As such, I am looking for a boat that is making an Atlantic crossing (going west!) this fall. This fellowship is my main motivation to crew on a boat, however, I also love being on the water! This fellowship will allow me to cover my own expenses and contribute to the boat’s kitty.
