I am ASA 104 certified. I would like to gain nautical miles and experience in pursuit of getting my captains license and my own boat in the next few years.
I sailed a 26" Colgate around Boston harbor and the surrounding islands for leisurely cruises for a few years. It was fun to be able to bring friends out for a fun day on the water. I have also participated in local pursuit races as a member of the crew on several boats. I have several friends with boats and sail/crew with them many weekend throughout the summer.
I have been a member of several crews each lasting 7-10 days.
I was a member of a crew sailing a 42' Bowman (mono-hull) from Carriacou, Grenada down to Trinidad. Our boat was a member of an 8 boat flotilla on an overnight passage (avoiding Venezuelan pirates). It was a very interesting voyage.
I worked as a crew member on a 44' Dean Catamaran from Savanna GA to Wilmington NC. This trip was more offshore sailing as we were out at sea 50 to 75 miles for several days at a time. It was an amazing experiences.
Just prior to the pandemic, I joined a crew on a 44' Kelly -Peterson sailing from Grenada up to Antigua stopping a various islands along the way. The voyage lasted 3.5 weeks and about 500 nm. It was a great experience practicing mooring and anchoring techniques seeing as we pulled into many harbors for the evenings. There were also a few sails on this trip lasting over 36 hrs and many day sails. It was great to visit and snorkel so many of the Caribbean islands during the trip.
Last month I helped crew a 38' Wauquiez from Kemah Tx over to Pensacola FL. We were out at sea for nearly 5 days pulling 2 hr shifts with 3 crew and the captain aboard. I was able to catch a Yellow Fin tuna along the way which fed the crew for several meals (one sushi and the two seared tuna).
This coming year I would like to continue to expand my knowledge and become a member of a crew do more long distant trips. I would like to find the right boat and crew and stay for an ocean crossing (blue water) voyage and maybe longer.
