Dear Shipmates

Introduction

UPDATE: June, 2024 --
I will be in Maine for the summer, including a short cruise among the beautiful islands of Penobscot Bay. In September I will leave to return to Florida and the Bahamas. This will be a powerboat cruise, either in this boat or a trawler yacht. I need crew!

I would like someone closer to my age, but still athletic. However, young women are always welcome, and I DO NOT HIT ON MY CREW. Nor do I yell at them! I do, however, cook for them!

Ultimately, I would like to find a woman partner interested in living in Maine and Canada during summer, and sailing to the Bahamas (and beyond) in winter, either as a romantic involvement or not. Anyone interested, please check that you fit my parameters for crew. I require crew who are agile and fit. Despite my age, I am very physically active. Experience is not a prerequisite... I have been teaching people to build boats and sail all my life. Women tell me that I "empower" them--which for me is a wonderful compliment. I am not looking for paid crew.

I am a highly experienced cruising captain with over 50 years experience sailing on three oceans. I have visited over twenty countries under sail. I am looking for a crew member who is more interested in the joys of nature than the noise of civilization (like phones!).

In 2012 I took Joee (142294) sailing with me, whom I found on FINDACREW!! She was a fantastic first mate and companion. I hoped to be so fortunate as to find someone like her again! And I did in 2016 (Becky), and again in 2020 (Chelsea). Who is next?

I am a well-known marine architect and master shipwright--my boats are built all over the world. I design and build all my personal cruising boats, as well as many for clients. My last and seventh personal cruising boat--a 53' LOD ketch motorsailer--was comfortable, safe, fast, with modern electronics and amenities. The new powerboat has refrigeration, hot water, solar panels, a chart-plotter and an autopilot.

My boats are safe and fast crossing the Gulf Stream. I typically leave in Jan/Feb/Mar. I often sail to Bimini, thence to the Bights of Andros, places that virtually no-one besides me ever visits, thence to the Exumas, Eleuthera, Cat Island, Long Island and other out islands. I seek natural, pristine places as well as being in George Town for the Family Island Regatta (native sloop races) in late April. I will provide basic provisions (food), pay for customs/immigration costs, and fuel. My crew must have "fun money"--perhaps $50/week or so, and be able to pay for their personal needs.

I would love to find a new first mate who is also a writer, and who can sail for months at a time. And if she can sing and play music, so much the better! I was once a singer/songwriter....

My 45-foot (53-foot LOA) schooner has taken two first mates from FINDACREW cruising in the Bahamas. Let's do it again!

I am looking for friendship and companionship, and (ideally) a partner. I do not yell at people, and I never "hit" on my crew. I am open to my crew member's needs and desires, and never ask anything of anyone that they are not comfortable doing. I am a Gaian by spiritual persuasion, and I am not comfortable with religious fundamentalism or proselytizing--hence I seek crew members who are "spiritual but not religious." I usually do most of the cooking (I am good!), but am happy to share cooking responsibilities. We eat healthy food on board, considering that fresh produce is sometimes hard to come by, and catch fish and collect shellfish, conch & crayfish. Absolutely no drugs are allowed on board except those with a current valid prescription. Heavy drinking is also not acceptable--light or social drinking is fine. We do not drink under way. We will be out of touch with the internet for days at a time, and my crew must not be "internet junkies." I am weary of people who are more involved with a phone than with real life!

My designs are often simple and traditional--but very easy to sail--or sometimes modern, as in my fast multihull designs. We will swim and dive in turquoise water whenever possible, and walk and run on pink sand beaches. We will explore caves. We will also go to pig roasts and barbecues while in George Town. Great Exuma has an international airport for family emergencies, and I can single-hand the boat home if necessary. While I have chosen the "romance" option for seeking crew members, that does not mean I am against having a platonic relationship with a woman who wants to experience cruising. I have been a faithful mentor to many young and older women, and I can prove it.
